Mark Nevin began his illustrious songwriting career back in 1989 as the writer and guitarist with his band Fairground Attraction.Together they won two Brit Awards: ‘best single’ for the Number-One hit ‘Perfect’ and ‘best album’ for The First of a Million Kisses.
However, the band’s success was short lived when internal tensions caused them to split, leaving Nevin with a raft of unrecorded songs at the ready. He went on to create Sweetmouth, with Brian Kennedy on vocals, and together they released the much loved and acclaimed album Goodbye To Songtown. By now Nevin had become in demand as a lyricist and tunesmith and, as co-writer and guitarist to Morrissey, he recorded an album, Kill Uncle, and four hit singles, ‘Our Frank’, ‘Sing Your Life’, ‘My Love Life’ and ‘Pregnant For The Last Time’. One Morrissey/Nevin track, ‘I Know It’s Gonna Happen Someday’, was later covered by David Bowie on his album Black Tie, White Noise.

Nevin also wrote and toured extensively with the sadly departed Kirsty MacColl, as well as collaborating as a songwriter with Paul Brady, Carleen Anderson, Lloyd Cole, Ringo Starr and Carole King, to name but a few. His songs have been covered by Joe Cocker, Mary Coughlan, Julio Iglesis, Mica Paris and Curtis Stigers, as well as former Fairground Attraction vocalist Eddi Reader.

In 1999, Nevin recorded his first solo album, Insensitive Songwriter, which received fine reviews: ‘…[This] beautifully understated album confirms he remains an astonishingly accomplished songsmith…the elegant simplicity of Nevin’s songs is beguiling…inspired, graceful, vulnerable…they will certainly make your life a better place.’ (Mojo) ‘Graceful songs which teeter, teeth-gnashingly, on the edge of sex’ (Q magazine). This was followed by The Mighty Dove, released in 2002 to equal acclaim and for which Nevin pulled together a select group of excellent musicians including his former Fairground Attraction band mates, Roy Dodds, Simon Edwards and Roger Beaujolais. They were joined in the studio by the legendary Faces keyboard player Ian McLagan, as well as a 22-piece orchestra conducted by Fiachra Trench (best known for his stunning string arrangements on Van Morrisson’s records).

Now, in 2011, Nevin has released his third solo album: Stand Beside Me in the Sun – a captivating collection of personal reflections in his inimitable and effortlessly upbeat style. The largely autobiographical tracks go from the wonderfully bizarre ‘I Know Where Ray Davies Lives’, to the strikingly melodic ‘Oh Mama’, ‘This Little Church’ and the joyful title track. The first reviews of the album read well as an indicator of more to come:

'...exquisite production…gorgeous melodies, every bit as sunny as the title suggests.' (R&R magazine)

'...a lovely confection of lilting pop tones, delicate guitars and meditations on the messy business of getting on with life'. (The Word)

'...robust and ecstatic' (Mojo)
