A strangely familiar sound, in an entirely new context... BJ Cole, the legendary pedal steel maestro and his vibraphone counterpart, the great Roger Beaujolais have come together to craft an intoxicating blend of their distinctively eclectic sounds, woven together by the acclaimed Simon Thorpe’s immaculate, textural double bass.
The result is a surprising reinvention of a familiar musical space, think of it as ‘Loft Jazz’... it’s up there somewhere, it’s luxurious, inspired and exudes an effortless cool.
Reputations precede them
Sting described BJ Cole as ‘the best pedal steel player in the world’. In a career stretching back to the mid-Sixties BJ’s recording credits read like a ‘Who’s Who’ of rock music. He has carved a reputation as the supreme innovator with his instrument adapting it across numerous genre’s of music.
Roger Beaujolais, like BJ, has taken his unusual instrument, the vibraphone into new contexts time and again. He is renowned as a master of the jazz idiom and is considered the leader in his field. A somewhat more youthful Simon Thorpe is fast becoming one of the UK’s favourite bassists, known for his exquisite style and compelling raw sound.
Exploring a new genre
For guys already so well established in the music world the LushLife project is a blast of pure youthful energy and enthusiasm combined with great musicianship, artistry and experience.

BJ and Roger are famous improvisers, as session musicians sought out for skill in adding and enhancing rather than playing to a score. With this in common LushLife was born with a fascination and curiosity to bring pedal steel and vibes together for the very first time. This collaboration of true exploration took them into territory encompassing jazz, chamber music and contemporary compositions, influenced by a century rather than a decade. Bringing Simon into the mix was the perfect melt.
Perfect artistry, idiosyncratic personalities, a wry humour and parallel styles unexpectedly converge and intertwine.
This feel good music is strangely familiar, captivating and cool as if born in the confines of established music architecture, but reinvented... and so it’s become known as ‘Loft Jazz’, a genre a step ahead.
